Dragon’s Loyalty Award

dragon

Hello!~ It’s actually been a while since I got nominated for an award so it’s going to be fun fun fun! Thank you, Summer from xingsings for nominating me for the Dragon’s Loyalty Award. I saw that she used a customized thumbnail for the award so I googled the original picture for the award. Erm…yes, so I’m going to also use a different picture because the original tag is not that appealing.

1. I am part of a traditional Chinese dance team that goes by a name with ‘Dragon’ in it.

2. I used to be a psychology and elementary ed major but I switched my psych major to iSTEM with a bio specialization so I will be graduating a semester late.

3. I think Zootopia is better than Frozen.

4. I don’t really watch any TV shows (believe me, I’ve tried) and I don’t have Netflix.

5. I love orange juice (not from concentrate). And 2% milk. Skim milk is so sickly-looking.

6. I rarely wear makeup. I’m just honestly lazy and even if I do, I just wear eyeliner.

7. I’m afraid of heights but I still go on roller coasters and ropes courses for the thrill of it.

Encouraging Thunder Award

Wow, there’s so many awards on the blogging platform that I can’t keep up! It’s always fun to discover a new one out there with super interesting concepts.

Many thanks to Dimple @enthrallingdimple and

Rules:

Thank the person who nominated you.
Post the Encouraging Thunder logo.
Mention your purpose in blogging.

Purpose of Blogging:

I have pretty much stopped deriving a joy from writing entering college. I have always preferred reading to writing simply because writing requires so much energy and contemplation. Although professors and teachers have praised for my writing, I did not go out of my way to write unless I absolutely must for homework or an assignment. I consider it technical writing and thus I did not practice ‘creative writing’ for a long while. For those people who actually read my reviews (thank you very much!), please bear with me because I’m still a writer-in-training. I usually don’t spell-check but I will try my best to get into the habit of it, and feel free to point out my typos and mistakes!

I also want to share my opinions and persuade people to read because reading is fun!! Whether it is reading my blog posts, reviews, or a book, I hope everyone will continue to pursue knowledge through literacy.

Free Spirit Award

free-spirit-award

One of the greatest gems of blogging is the nominations and passing on of awards. It is such a great interactive tool especially amidst the blogging community when blogs tend to be a lone venture in stream-of-consciousness. This is actually what I want to talk about since the award has given me leeway to spew whatever I want!

Thank you for nominating me, Honya and for leaving the topic as eponymous as the award name. 🙂 From what I see, I need to only follow this guideline: Use the topic that the previous nominee provided you with and go off on that tangent. And be sure to nominate other great bloggers in the end!!
Since the topic was left open, I’ll just follow up on what Honya discussed in her post. I came into blogging naturally because of my long-standing love of books. I had always been a bookworm and it was further intensified when I discovered Goodreads. However, I didn’t truly start writing full reviews until college sophomore year (which was when I started up this blog) and I truthfully didn’t think I would stay. I assumed I would put hours of effort into making my WP website just like how I did with Tumblr and Pinterest but then quit a few days later. I had a strong ambition because writing is not my strongest skill set and my long-term goal was simply to write about what I read. So it’s been 9 months and I’m still here. I don’t know if my writing has improved because I’m still writing colloquially, and I personally did not feel a cataclysmic shift towards publish-worthy writing.

Frankly, there is no subject other than books that I can happily write and gush about. (I mean…I have Bangtan Boys and my favorite kdramas but I’m so biased that I’ll end up fangirling most of the time when I write about them.) It’s hard nowadays to find someone who loves to read, and it’s even harder to find someone love the same books I read. Sure, I found friends who loved The Glass Throne series by Sarah Maas but I’m also looking for those who read my other favorites. Where are you people?!

I really felt welcomed in the community and the amount of feedback I’ve gotten simply through a like or comment is immensely motivating. Although I don’t need people to read my posts, I am honored that they do. Even if the blogger skims through my writing, I believe it is still reading because they get the gist of what I want to say and they get a hefty idea of my writing style. My thoughts aren’t important and the fact that someone is taking time to read them, it is an absolute miracle!

So thank you to all you commenters, likers, and nominators! I really enjoy blogging and now that I’m taken up with school and work, I still hope someone will read whatever meager posts I come up with. It is an empowering outlet for me and I’m glad I made the transition from keeping a diary as a child to writing short GR blurbs to airing out longer thoughts on WordPress.

I want to nominate new followers and hear what they say!

3 Quotes Challenge- Day 3

I was nominated by Kath from The Last Reader for the 3 Days 3 Quotes Challenge. Thank you for nominating me! And here’s Day 3!!

The rules are simple:

• Thank the person who nominated you.
• Post one quote each day for 3 days (it can be anybody’s quote, even yours. Make sure you credit it properly), and lastly,
• Tag 3 different bloggers everyday.

“All right, my hope—but I am not saying the rest of it—I have something you need to feel.”
She feigned the sound of outrage. “But we barely know each other, sir!”
He laughed softly. “But you must hold it in your hand and feel it change,” he urged, in her ear. “I insist. I can wait no longer.”
She knew they were on a serious subject, but the flutter of his breath on her skin, the low drawl of his words—heat raced along all her nerve endings. “Will I like it?”
“Well, I do have to apologize for its size. It is rather small.” And with that, he pressed something rather small into her hand.”

The humor is totally on point in the book and I completely love the witty banter between all the characters. So this was one of my favorite fantasy series and I’m waiting on the third book The Immortal Heights. The author Sherry Thomas’s writing is fantastic and she makes words seem so fun and interesting to read!! It’s the perfect series to binge-read and it’s especially unique for the fantasy genre.

He knows bad days. Bad days take him completely by surprise. They make him not trust the good days because it’s likely something is lurking twenty-four hours away.

Let me tell you, read Melina Marchetta’s books. READ THEM. Any one of her books, it’s your choice because I guarantee you that you’ll enjoy it.

3 Quotes Challenge- Day 1

I was nominated by Kath from The Last Reader for the 3 Days 3 Quotes ChallengeThank you for nominating me!

The rules are simple:

Thank the person who nominated you.
Post one quote each day for 3 days (it can be anybody’s quote, even yours. Make sure you credit it properly), and lastly,
Tag 3 different bloggers everyday.

“He loves me, and I reward his love by forcing on him something he hates. In the evening, after we dance, he rarely returns to the throne; he dances with others or moves from place to place through the room. The court thinks he is trying to be gracious, sharing his attention. Only I see that he moves always to the empty spot and the court always moves after him. He is like a dog trying to escape his own tail. He indulged himself in one brief moment of privacy, and almost died of it. Relius, he hates being king.”

Oh, Eugenides is one of my favorite protagonists of all time! He’s clever, exceedingly stubborn, and can outsmart his whole court!

I’d like to nominate some new people I haven’t really chatted with so here we go:

Real Neat Blog Award

image

First off, thank you Suganiya Rassiah for nominating me!! Although I’ve only had this blog for a few months, I’m glad you and others are checking it out. I honestly didn’t expect anyone to read my posts or even talk to me. Thank you again and thank you to the fellow bloggers out there!

For readers, I hope you will retain an open mind when you read my answers because I’m usually a happy-go-lucky person. I like writing because it makes me realize how much I’ve suppressed and helps me express myself when I cannot do so in real life for several reasons. One of the reasons being that no one wants to be around someone who only talks about him/herself.

1. Do you like to read books? Why?
I didn’t grow up with gaming devices or cell phones so it was a miracle that I found books to read. I often worked at my parents’ restaurant after school and books were often the only form of entertainment for me. I enjoy reading books now not because it’s the only option but because I ended up finding the right ones to read. (Goodreads helped a lot.)

2. Tell me the character which would resembles the true you?
I can’t say because I don’t often see Chinese characters in books, media, or other forms of entertainments. Aside from Chinese-American characters, I’m also not that nerdy so I feel like I don’t necessarily fit into any molds that high school labels students with. I’m diligent but I wasn’t a straight-A student, I’m trying to stop being a pushover, and I use obliviousness as a defense mechanism when the current situation makes me feel uncomfortable. As you can see, I’m not quite the model main character authors write about. I guess I could be the sidekick of a hero/heroine because I’m steadfast and optimistic most of the time.

3. The name of your first crush and have you ever told him/her that?

No name. My first serious one was in middle school and we had a great friendship…that ended up falling apart. My self-esteem at that time was in Tartarus so there was no way that I could have confessed. I knew the feeling was mutual though so I regret not telling him since it would have led to us going out. It’s a really embarrassing story to tell because it was my fault that he stopped talking to me.

4. If you could be one character out of a book, who would that be?

Eugenides from The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whalen Turner or L from Death Note. I wonder how it feels to be so clever and expert at mind games especially with their cutthroat reputations.
I admit at one point I wanted to be like Percy Jackson from Rick Riordan’s Olympian series because who doesn’t want to be ruler of the sea? I can’t swim so I was envious of his abilities but then I realized he’s constantly hogged by monsters so I retract that wish.

5. The little things that put a smile on your face everyday?

I get happy when I see people reading because LITERATURE IS NOT DEAD.

Little messages or gestures from friends to show that they thought about you or care about you. It can be a snapchat directed at me specifically (yea, social media) or a quick message asking me how I am. It’s significantly more meaningful now because it’s the summer when people are usually off doing their own things.

6. The happiest thing that has ever happened to you?

I had a lot of worries about what I was going to do this summer but I got accepted to a month-long English teaching program in Taiwan, and I’m boarding the plane in a couple weeks. It’s been a miserable month up until now because I have been working at my parents’ Chinese restaurant and trust me, you don’t want to work for your parents. I have mixed feelings about leaving the country because I’m about to meet other strangers my age and my Mandarin is only competent. I don’t have problems making friends but I have insecurities about social acceptance which is mainly a byproduct of a bad summer spent as a sleepaway camp counselor. (That’s a whole other story about counselor cliques and their imposed isolation that I’ll tell one day.)

I also joined a fandom for the first time [BTS: check out their newest MV] and it has been so much fun and laughter. I have never been so dedicated and fixated wholeheartedly on a subject so it’s a strange experience.

7. Do you believe in true love? (Did I sound like a corny website there?)

I don’t think I do anymore. I used to romanticize about my love life but for some reason, I never allowed any guys to get past friendship. I will keep my eye out for the one but I’m not going to look.

Sidenote: This got very personal and I rifted through years of cringe-worthy and nostalgic memories to write what I could. However, I explored many of my deep-seated anxieties to a surprisingly far extent and I’m glad to answer these questions as truthfully as possible.
